Idaho Domestic Violence Court

Idaho was the first state in the nation to authorize Domestic Violence Courts under Title 32, Chapter 14. Idaho is also the only state with legislation explicitly supporting Domestic Violence Court Coordinators. These efforts demonstrate Idaho’s focus on innovation, collaboration, and long-term public safety.

Domestic Violence Courts currently operate in five judicial districts. Each court applies the same core standards while tailoring services to local needs.

Idaho Domestic Violence Courts strengthen the justice system’s response to domestic violence by improving victim safety, increasing offender accountability, and coordinating information across related cases. These courts use research-based practices to support families, streamline processes, and ensure consistent judicial oversight.

This page provides an overview of Idaho’s Domestic Violence Court and links to state laws and programs.

Domestic violence cases often involve multiple court actions, complex family needs, and significant safety concerns. Idaho Domestic Violence Courts are designed to reduce these challenges by assigning all related cases—criminal and civil—to a single judge. This structure allows the court to:

  • Make informed decisions based on complete and accurate information

  • Issue consistent and coordinated orders

  • Improve safety outcomes for victims and children

  • Hold offenders accountable through close monitoring and clear expectations

The model combines expedited criminal case processing with ongoing judicial review. Victims gain a stronger voice in the process, and families receive early referrals to services and resources.

Coordinators are central to each Domestic Violence Court. Their work helps courts operate more effectively and strengthens community-wide responses to domestic violence. Coordinators:

  • Identify gaps in local services

  • Support the development of treatment options for victims and offenders

  • Assist rural communities with limited resources

  • Facilitate communication among justice partners, service providers, and stakeholders

Idaho’s Domestic Violence Courts include the following foundational components:

  • Case assignment
  • Expedited hearings
  • Case coordination
  • Supervision of offender progress
  • Evaluation and assessment of offenders
  • Treatment standards and approved providers
  • Collaboration with key partners
  • Courthouse safety measures
  • Ongoing evaluation and performance monitoring
